2020 School Reopening Survey

2020 YRDSB School Reopening Plan Feedback from Parents

Dear Parents

This is a very a difficult time for all of us. COVID 19 has had an untold impact. I am concerned about our students and our parents and guardians. The Leger Poll just stated that 66% of parents are worried about sending their children to school. 63% are sending them. I have received over 100 emails and messages with questions and concerns.

On July 30, 2020, the Ministry of Education announced its decision for the reopening of schools in September.

The province stated that parents/guardians will have the choice to keep their child at home if they do not feel comfortable returning to school in person in the fall.

Although School Boards are mandated by the Ministry, and YRDSB will put in place the best plan possible.

As your School Trustee of YRDSB, I want to have constant input from the community on this particular issue before the School starts and to help me with future planning.

A: Not much information is provided to parents to make decisions. Even COVID has been impacting school way before summer, still no detailed plan has been made after months. For online class, there is no definitive answer if french immersion will be accommodated. Why can’t the teachers from our own school be secured for online class? Why online students have to be dumped in a pool and be assigned to whoever online? This just adds an additional level of stress to the kids. Elementary kids may not be comfortable when they do not learn from the teachers in their own school. And if we have issues to raise, do we go back to our own school principal? Will online learning be assessed? How would parents know if our kids have any struggles and need help? How are teachers be chosen for online classes? Will online classes be conducting in a similar way as in school? Meaning real time instruction and discussion with teachers and classmates? There are too many questions as there is too little information provided to parents.
